The monumental design was conceived as a city gate for Munich in 1816. However by the time the project commenced in 1848 city gates were no longer needed and the project was almost abandoned.
Designed in a severe Doric style it draws on the Athenian Propylaea guarding the Acropolis, the Dipylon tower, and also the massive temple architecture of Ancient Egypt.
The reliefs and sculptures are by Ludwig Schwanthaler commemorating the Greek War of Independence.
It was finally completed in 1862.
