The Church of St Paul at Covent Garden
St Paul’s Covent Garden, London 1631
Inigo Jones, 1573—1652
The handsomest barn in England…
Drawn showing the original design, with two doors, now blocked up, and the steps leading up to what Hawksmoor called “The Temple at Covent Garden”.
“When the Earl of Bedford sent for Inigo, he told him he wanted a chapel for the parishioners of Covent-garden, but added, he wou'd not go to any considerable expence; in short, said he, I wou'd not have it much better than a barn.—well! then, replied Jones, you shall have the handsomest barn in England.” Horace Walpole
